The University of Oviedo and Oviedo Filarmonía Orchestra, with the sponsor of Oviedo's cultural department, initiate a project through the program of cultural activities organised by the Vice-Rector's Office for University Extension and Communication. Both institutions have united their efforts to offer the Asturian audience two high-quality recitals which provide novelties to the cultural scene.

The first meeting of the University Choir and Oviedo Filarmonía Orchestra will be next 27 April at the Príncipe Felipe Auditorium with the worldwide premier of The Eternal Dream by the up-and-coming Asturian composer, Guillermo Martínez, and inspired by Edgar Alan Poe's stories. Jonathan Willcocks' Magnificat will complete the program. The concert will begin at 20 pm, with admission free and open to all. Both groups will give another recital on Saturday 28 from 20 pm at the Valey Cultural Centre, in Piedras Blancas.

The conductor of the University Choir, Joaquín Valdeón, will conduct both groups in the presentation of the new work, written for a vocal sextet and a mixed choir. The work adopts the shape of a profane cantata with noticeable Poe's gothic and bloomy influences.

Live Music and Cinema

The collaboration between the University of Oviedo and Oviedo Filarmonía Orchestra will take a new step by blending music and cinema. Next 17 May at 20 pm at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo, there will be a showing of the classic Fritz Lang's Metrópolis (1927) with the performance of the orchestra, conducted by Marzio Conti, which will play the sound track of the film live while it is being showed. For this occasion, the orchestra will perform a music arrangement by Berndt Heller, whose score directly comes from Germany. The staging of this project requires a previous laborious preparation in order to perfectly synchronise live music and images.
