The University of Oviedo has just published its first Social Responsibility Report 2010, a paper radiograph which reflects the Asturian academic institution's image in society. The document collects the main details and activities about the quality and social commitment in teaching, a socially responsible R&D&I, the commitment with the staff's training and promotion, gender equality and family conciliation, occupational risk prevention, commitment with the environment, economic transparency and efficiency, promotion of culture and sport, volunteering and cooperation for development.
The rector, Vicente Gotor, and the vice-rector for Economic Planning, Santiago Álvarez has presented this report as a tool for transparency and dissemination of the university activity aimed to Asturian society. The document explains, among other issues, the milestones of 2010 and the challenges established for the 2011/ 2012, as well as the indicators marked by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), an independent body which created the first global standard to elaborate sustainability reports.
Among the strengths which are collected in the report, the improvement in the academic performance of students, the advance in the field of gender equality, the attention to specific needs, the uptake of European research projects, the commitment with energetic preservation and sustainability and the rejuvenation of teaching staff must be emphasized.
The collected information mainly refers to the 2010 exercise, though according to its relevancy and availability also includes data of previous years so that readers can get a more complete opinion of the University's evolution.
The challenges indicated by the rector were the reduction of the teachers-students ratio due to the adaptation to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) with the increasing of the workforce, an upper involvement of companies with University, and an increasing in the number of European projects, with special interest in that they can be managed by the University of Oviedo.
