"Mining Engineering and Civil Works" is a 4,5 ECTS obligatory subject, developed in the first semester of the second course.

Theory

  1. Excavability studies in mining and civil works
  2. Economical study of mining pits and linear works. 
  3. Earth movement design and optimization
  4. Equipment selection and operation: excavator, bulldozer, dumper, draglines, bucket wheel stacker reclaimer
  5. Safety issues and enviromental impact. Local applicable laws and regulations

Problems and practical examples

  1. Excavability
  2. Open pit economical parameters
  3. LHDs optimization
  4. Transport optimization in excavator/dumper systems

Laboratory: some of the following tasks as per its availability

  1. Field inspection trips: surface mines or excavation works
  2. Software Surpac / Minesight / Recmin:
    1. Survey and database management
    2. Block model developing (IDW interpolation)
    3. Open pit design
    4. Economical feasibiliy of an open pit

Block model

  • Theory and software background: 24 h
  • Problems and applications: 4 h
  • Laboratory and/or field: 6 h

Conventional evaluation:

  • Theoretical/Practical Exams/Portfolio: 60%
  • Exercises and class works: 20%
  • Software/Field Reports: 20%

Students that follow the differenciated evaluation will be examined of all the three parts of the subject (theory, exercises, software) in a final exam.
