"Dare to come to the campus by bike!". This is the slogan chosen by the University and the City council to publicize the "Plan 30 Oviedo: City and University ready for the bikes" which is trying to make extensible the use of this means of transport to the centre of the town. The academic institution is trying to boost an ecological and sustainable mobility, particularly in the university community member's diary trips. In order to promote this objective, in line with the Campus of International Excellence, the University has installed "bike- parks" in the campus of El Cristo, El Milán, Los Catalanes and LLamaquique.

The presentation of this proposal, which will go with awareness campaigns and talks, took place in the Historical Building of University with the presence of the rector, Vicente Gotor; the vice- rector for Students and Employment, Susana López Ares and the vice-rector for Infrastructures, Campus and Sustainability, José Carlos Ricos; and the director of the University services area, Eduardo Rodríguez. In representation of the City Council, the town councillor for Citizen's security and Traffic, Concepción García, and the Local police intendant, Manuel Antonio Secades, participated in the act.

The rector encouraged all the university students to take part in this initiative and to use the bicycle as means of transport not only to go to the Campus but to move around the city. Vicente Gotor reminded that the "Plan 30 Oviedo: City and university ready for the bikes" is intended to sensitize the students so that they use the "bike" not only in their daily trips from home to the centre, but in their trips from one campus to each other, to the administrative services, sports facilities, libraries or university halls residences. Besides the contribution to preserve the environment, this initiative also aims to promote healthy habits in society, through exercise.

The town councillor explained the basic principles, on which the Plan 30 is based, a mobility European Project which is trying to offer alternative means of transport, more ecological and healthier. To this end, the centre of the city has been adjusted and the speed limit has been set at 30 kilometres per hour.

By the university of Oviedo, the first step has been to install bicycle racks -funded by the City Hall of Oviedo- with capacity for 20 places in the city's campus: Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (Campus of El Cristo), Faculty of Geology (Llamaquique), Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (El Milán) and the residence of San Gregorio (Los Catalanes).

Furthermore, there have been talks to aware students and the university will work to promote the use of motorized bicycles, especially for the students who have to travel to "El Cristo", as Susana López Ares noted. In February, after the examination period, the Vice-rector for Students and Employment will organize some conferences to raise awareness in the Great Hall of the Historical Building in order to promote the use of the bicycle as part of the university community.

Between the initiatives to promote this alternative means of transport, a bike riders meeting, a kind of popular marathon is thought to be done. Representatives from the City hall and University will make a specific route in order to encourage the use of bikes. The vice-rector of Infrastructures, Campus and Sustainability stressed that this Project is part of the new campus model which is trying to be promoted from the Campus of International Excellence: open campus so that citizens can take part of them.
