Exhibitions, scientific meetings, a poetry reading and a concert are some of the events of the LAUDEO Cultural Centre's programme
The Cultural Centre of University Extension LAUDEO (The old University of Oviedo) has begun its activities with some events linked with the awarding of the Príncipe de Asturias Prizes. Exhibitions, scientific meetings, work breakfasts, in collaboration with the Foundation that organizes these prizes, and the poetry reading and the concert to homage Leonard Cohen, organized by the University, have been very successful among the audience and have had a great repercussion on the national and regional media.
During the last week, the Historical Building of the University and the Campus of el Milán have been visited by different winners of the Príncipe de Asturias prizes who have taken part in open events.
The central hall of the Library hosts the "Transacciones. España en la historia de la Royal Society" exhibition, which was inaugurated the last 19th of October by the chief manager of this institution (awarded with the 2011's Príncipe de Asturias Prize of Communication and Humanities) Paul Nurse, also winner of the Nobel Prize of Medicine. Nurse attended that same day a scientific meeting in the Auditorium called "El Universo en una cáscara de nuez. Los grandes retos de la ciencia del futuro " (Universe in a chestnut. The great challenge of future science), with the head of the Higher Council of Scientific Research (CSIC), Rafael Rodrigo, and the professor of Microbiology of the Complutense University, César Nombela who served as moderator.
The exhibition dedicated to the Royal Society, which will remain open up to the 13th of November, was privately visited by some of the winners interested in meeting this exhibition closer. Among them, Arturo Álvarez-Buylla and Robert Altman (Winners of the Príncipe de Asturias Prizes of Scientific and Technical Research), and representatives from the "heroes of Fukushima" group (awarded with the Príncipe de Asturias Prize of Concorde) must be mentioned.
The University Chapel and the Auditorium were the stage for three work breakfast with the winners of Scientific and Technical Research Prizes, Giacomo Rizzolatti and Arturo Álvarez-Buylla as well as with Howard Gardner, winner of the Social Sciences Prize.
At the Campus of el Milán, Leonard Cohen, awarded with the Príncipe de Asturias Prize of Letters, inaugurated the "Cohen. La Cara B. Dibujos y Grabados de un artista multidiscplinar" (Cohen. The B side. Drawings and Engravings of a multidisciplinary artist) last 21st of October and he was given a tribute by hundreds of students from the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. That same day, the Auditorium of the Campus of Humanities held a poetry reading organized by University Extension and the "Aula de las Metáforas", with Niall Binns and Fernando Beltrán as main protagonists.
Some artists whose career started at the Campus of El Milán in the 90s offered the "First we take Milán" concert, a tribute to Leonard Cohen and a very emotive meeting of these alumni with the University. For those who couldn't attend this very special concert, the University of Oviedo, in collaboration with the TPA, will publish a DVD with a documentary and a live concert.
All these events have had media coverage through news, reports, interviews published in written press, audiovisual media and digital publications both regional and national as well as in the social networks.
