Participation of the University of Oviedo in a G-9 seminar about health, sexual and gender rights in Ethiopia
Apart from the G-9 representatives, there also were representatives from the universities of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia.
Under the "Advanced Seminar in good university practices in Laws and Sexual and Reproductive Health, with gender perspective", the 9 Universities Group (G-9) developed the second meeting of these characteristics that the Group holds in Africa and in which 11 universities took part. It was funded by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation to Development (AECID).
The seminar could be done thanked to the collaboration with the University of Hawassa, local partner and the African universities of Moi (Kenya), Muhimbili (Tanzania) and Makerere (Uganda); together with the Spanish universities of Cantabria, Oviedo, Basque Country, Zaragoza, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Balearic Islands, all of them are members of the G-9.
Among the guest lecturers to this seminar, the presence of Adriana Kaplan, coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Group for the prevention and the study of harmful traditional practices from the Autonomous University of Barcelona has to be highlighted. She talked about the work that she's performing against the practice of female genital mutilation which prevails in some African countries; and Eduardo Bidaurratzaga, teacher and researcher from the Hegoa Institute, who explained the advocacy in sexual and reproductive health rights and the role of university as an actor in civil society.
Lecturers from Spanish and African universities stressed the diverse aspects of sexual and reproductive health with some talks about each university's involvement in this area through curriculum development and new areas of research, the situation of gender violence in each of the countries and maternal mortality, among others.
Among this seminar's objectives, the elaboration of a document about good practices on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Human Rights were planned, a document which will be released before the end of the year and which will contain the conclusions of the seminar. The cooperation possibilities in joint PhD programmes, students and teaching mobility as well as the use of G-9's on-line platform to exchange documents about knowledge areas in which the universities worked, will be analyzed too.
