The University and the Principality of Asturias have inaugurated the new facilities of the Campus of Mieres
The rector has described Barredo's complex as a 'model campus', which has now a new research building, a hall of residence and sports facilities.
There's been total agreement about how relevant the Campus of Mieres must be and how this will develop the Mining Regions. That was the spirit which governed the inauguration ceremony of the new facilities of the Campus of Barredo which Vicente Gotor described as "a model campus".
Representatives from all the institutions involved in this project attended yesterday to the event. The mayor of Mieres, Luis María García, started his speech defining the Campus and its enlargement as "the most emblematic project of the reactivation process in the Mining Regions". García affirmed that the development of the Campus of Barredo represents a living project which generates hope in Mieres society. He concluded saying that this university facilities have already turned the city and the region into a formative reference.
On the other hand, the manager of Infrastructures Area of the Restructuration for the Coal Mining Industry and the Alternative Development for Mining Regions Institute, Manuel Gómez-Cano, assessed the group efforts which made possible the achievement of this project. It's an initiative which can be considered, as he confirmed, "a considerable improvement in the living conditions of the Mining Regions". Gómez-Cano stressed that "formation is the most important part for a country" and, in this framework, he mentioned the chance of developing future collaborations between his Institution and the Principality of Asturias. .
The rector of the University of Oviedo emphasized that the Campus of Mieres' project is a "new step to the future". It was a group initiative, not exempt from difficulties, which was successful "due to institutional cooperation". That's the reason why the rector dedicated a main part of his speech to appreciate all the efforts that all the participants had made: institutions, mining unions and citizenship, stressing the labour of its predecessors in the Rector office and the work of the Campus of Mieres' staff.
Gotor affirmed that he felt proud of moving forward with a campus which "is more than a teaching and researching centre". According to the rector's opinion, Barredo's facilities make what "a model campus" must be. The rector also talked about the future and he confirmed the introduction of the Civil Engineer Grade for the next academic year. (These are the only new studies planned by the University). Finally, he wished that, working together, "the campus would be full of students, who can act as a transformer element" and this can be a place "where the ideas, the knowledge, the innovation and the enterprising culture needed in the Mining Regions and in Asturias can grow freely".
The act was closed by the president of the Principality. Vicente Álvarez Areces pointed out that the investment of 133 million of Euros has converted the Campus of Mieres in "one of the best of Spain because of its quality and its huge offer of services". He also qualified it as "the physical expression of the commitment with research and innovation" as development factors in the Mining Regions.
Álvarez Areces emphasized "the intelligence and the ambition" shown by the trade unions which transformed the hard negotiating process of the mining sector's reconversion into an element which has reactivated the territory. Thus, they are the "precursors" of the postulates which are defended in Europe nowadays. The president praised the central Government as well since it was able to fund these investments. Likewise, he took advantage of the local mention to leave local concepts apart and understand the value of the university offer which is formed by all the campus of Asturias.
The delegation visited part of the recently-inaugurated buildings, which are extended on 18.400 square metres. The Research centre is eight floors high. In addition to the spaces created for the research labour and complimentary resources such as auditoriums, classrooms and library, this building will house the University Institute of Nature Resources and Regional Planning –which have already taken their places-, the Cantabrian Institute of Biodiversity, the European Centre for Soft Computing, the Digital Imaging Cluster and the future Supercomputing Centre.
The hall of Residence has single rooms and apartments and it can house 120 people. The sports facilities are composed by outdoor facilities (football field with artificial grass, two tennis courts, four paddle-tennis courts and athletics track) and a sports hall with several tracks, multipurpose rooms, sauna, gym, changing rooms and stands with a capacity of 700 spectators.
