A PhD Thesis defended at the University of Oviedo has been given the award for best PhD Thesis in this field by the Spanish Society of Classical Studies. The research has been conducted by Javier Verdejo Manchado and was directed by Professor Lucía Rodríguez-Noriega Guillén at the Department of Classical and Romance Philology of the University of Oviedo.

Titled Léxico de los cómicos griegos fragmentarios de la transición entre los ss. V-IV a.C., Verdejo Manchado has conducted an exhaustive lexicographic study of the group of 21 Attic fragmentary comedians that started their literary career at the end of the 5th Century BCE and continued it during the beginning of the 4th Century BCE.

The composition of a detailed vocabulary of this comedians is particularly interesting due not only to the richness of their vocabulary, that encompasses very diverse fields, but also because these authors give a reliable account of the state of the language spoken at their time, and, moreover, through parody and satire, they are excellent witnesses of the socio-cultural context of Athens between the 5th and 4th centuries. This is the first collective study that thoroughly analyzes these authors.

The Thesis has been organized into 21 individual glossaries, one for each comedian and each one preceded by a general introduction to the life and works of its corresponding author, with a bibliography. In these glossaries, furthermore, each lexeme has a number of sections (parallels, frequency, dialect, accent, prosody, text, compounds, meaning, commentary and variants) that follows the history of each term and obtains other relevant information related to its parallels in the Greek literature, its measurement and position in the verse, the textual problems that it poses, etc. The Thesis is concluded with a general index of words, diverse appendices, and a bibliography.
