The University of Oviedo will hold tomorrow, April 28, the second round in the election of a new rector, process in which more than 24.957 members may participate. Full professors José Muñiz and Santiago García Granda take part in this second round after having obtained 34,004% and 32,97% respectively in the weighed voting process on April 21. The polls will be open between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and the results may be followed live on the institutional website of the University of Oviedo or the big screen placed in the Historical Building. After the election process, the provisional candidate will be announced; the official appointment will be held on May 5.

The distribution of the electoral census according to sectors is detailed as follows: Group A: PhD Professors with permanent position, 1.309; Group B: rest of teaching and research staff, 1.121; Group C: students, 21.580; and Group D: members of Administration and Services Staff, 947. Participation details will be available by sectors on the institutional website and the counting process will start at 7 p.m.

This process relies on a weight voting system according to the following percentages: Full Professors with permanent position at the University, 55%; rest of teaching and research staff, 10%; students of the 3 cycles, 25%; members of Administration and Services Staff, 10%.

First round

José Muñiz and Santiago García Granda were the most voted candidates in the rector elections held on April 21. Full Professor of Psychometry José Muñiz obtained 34,004% of the weighed votes and Full Professor of Physical Chemistry obtained 32,97%. The other 2 candidates participating in the process, Pedro Sánchez Lazo, field of Biochemistry, and Agustín Costa, Chemistry, obtained 25,3875% and 7,7932% respectively.

Participation rate reached 26,48% of the 25.000 participants, 2 points over the percentage registered in 2012. In absolute numbers, José Muñiz obtained 2.017 votes; Santiago García Granda, 2.107; Pedro Sánchez Lazo, 1.844; and Agustín Costa, 360.

As for sectors, the highest participation rate was that of the group of PhD Professors with permanent position with 86,48 (1.309 voters); followed by Administration and Services Staff (PAS), with 80,15% (759); rest of teaching and research staff with 55,84% (626); and finally the group of students, with 18,96% (4.090).

The campus that registered the highest participation rate was Oviedo Centro, 43,21% of voters; followed by Cristo B, with 34,01%; Oviedo centro and Humanities, with 33,51%; Llamaquique-Los Catalanes, with 26,76%; Mieres, with 26,47%; El Cristo A, with 20,44%; Campus of Gijón, with 21,41%; and Gijón- Laboral, with 16,05%.
