Researchers of the University detect an earthquake of magnitude 7 in the Atlantic Ocean 8.800 kilometers away
The seismic network of the research Project SISCAN recorded an earthquake yesterday, whose epicenter was located at a depth of 14 km
The seismic stations included in the network of the Project SISCAN, developed by researchers of the Department of Geology of the University of the University of Oviedo, recorded an earthquake yesterday, which occurred at 14:51 in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, 8.795 km away from Asturias. It was a 7.0-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale, with its epicenter at a depth of 14 kilometers.
The earthquake was recorded with great quality, in spite of being far away from the epicenter. The collected data are useful information in order to get a better knowledge of the different layers of the Earth.
The Project SISCAN is led by professor of the Department of Geology Javier Álvarez Pulgar and is supported by a team consisting of 10 researchers. The seismic network is made up of more than 30 stations, located in the north of the peninsula. Their control unit is located in the facilities of the Department of Geology.
