The Rector of the University of Oviedo and Full Professor of Organic Chemistry, Vicente Gotor, will become a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, an institutional organization aimed at the promotion of studies and research on different aspects of Europe and which is joined by 30 Nobel Prizes. Vicente Gotor will be inducted into the Academy on Saturday, March 7, in a ceremony held in Salzburg.

 

The nomination of the Rector of the University has been a proposal of the members of the Spanish delegation in the field of Natural Sciences, and it was accepted by the Presidential Board, which is made up of 12 members. The European Academy of Sciences and Arts was founded in Vienna in 1990, aiming to contribute to Europe´s unity from different perspectives. Founded by the prestigious cardiologist Dr. Felix Unger, the Academy has its headquarters in Salzburg and develops its work through 23 European delegations and an American one, which provide their support with the common goal of promoting studies and research related to the current problems that the new Europe is facing.

 

In Spain, there are only 75 people that join this Institution, and Vicente Gotor is now one of them. Among the Spanish academicians, we find several Prince of Asturias Awards like scientists Santiago Grisolía and Enrique Moreno, economist Juan Velarde or the well-known psychologist José Luis Pinillos. Among the members of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, we also find Margarita Salas, chemists José Elguero and Miguel Yus, Cristóbal Halffter, Federico Mayor Zaragoza, José Manuel Sánchez Ron or Juan Navarro Baldeweg, just to mention a few Spanish members.
