The Rectors agree to a moratorium on the Decree to reform the university system approved by the Government
The Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities suggests not implementing this new three-year degrees system before September 2016.
The Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) has agreed to a moratorium on the Decree approved by the Council of Ministers last Friday. The Rectors request a moratorium to process the three-year degrees until September 2016, which means they would not be implemented until the academic year 2017. The CRUE has released the following announcement:
As regards the approval on January 30, 2015, by the Council of Ministers, of the Decree the amends Royal Decree 1393/2007, of October 29, which regulates university official studies, and Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, which regulates PhD official studies, the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), in a General Assembly of February 2, 2015, and after a long discussion, agrees:
- To reaffirm the need of a moratorium, which they already requested in the past, concerning the application of this Royal Decree.
- To ask all universities and autonomous communities not to start processing the proposals pursuant to this regulation until September 2016. The main objective is to apply this regulation properly, avoiding confusion in our society, and thus protecting the strength of the Spanish university system.
- To state that, even considering the changes in the structure of some university programmes, it is a priority to finish first, the evaluation of the degrees currently in force. Likewise, we consider it necessary to carry out an in-depth reflection on the future of the Spanish university system concerning the funding model, before implementing a new structure that could have serious consequences in the university system if we are not cautious.
- To declare that the biggest concern of the CRUE, is the protection of the quality of the academic offer, provided by our universities, also ensuring equal opportunities for all the students. Moreover, we consider it essential to provide society with all the necessary information about the new structure of degrees and master programmes resulting from this Decree, in order to guarantee the best training and employability of our graduates.
