The 4th PhD Meetings of the University of Oviedo gather more than 300 young researchers

The meeting, which took place at the Campus of Mieres, doubled the number of participants and showed 116 posters with the work of PhD candidates from all the fields of knowledge

The young researchers from the University of Oviedo are tracing the lines of the future of Asturian research in the 4th PhD Meetings of the University of Oviedo, which doubled this year the participation of previous years. A total of 320 PhD Candidates attended the meeting that took place at the Campus of Mieres, where 116 posters that summarize the work they have done to develop their PhD Theses.

The Rector of the University of Oviedo, Vicente Gotor, was in charge of inaugurating the 4th PhD Meetings alongside the director of the International Center for Postgraduate Studies, Carmen Bermejo, and Asunción Cámara, director of the Polytechnic School of Mieres. "You are the present and the future", claimed the Rector to a nearly-full auditorium, to which he reminded that the PhD student "is a very important added value". Vicente Gotor highlighted the high level of the research conducted inside the Asturian academic institution, which has registered in the past few years a 40% increase in scientific publications with maximum impact. "The University needs a generational shift that is rooted in the young blood of PhDs", concluded the Rector.

The hall of the Polytechnic School of Mieres hosted the exhibition of 116 posters that gather the contents of the research of a sizeable amount of the participants in the meetings. A jury of experts awarded the work by Ramón Díaz Noriega with his poster entitled Desarrollo metodológico para la caracterización geotérmica de minas subterráneas, conceptualización y modelización numérica. The votes of the audience awarded the poster entitled Disolventes eutécticos de bajo punto de fusión (Deep Eutectic Solvents, DES): Nuevos disolventes biorenovables en procesos de síntesis orgánica catalizados por complejos de transición, designed by Christian Vidal Valdés.

The number of participants in the exhibition of posters registered a notable increase of 30 more posters. PhD candidates of all the fields of knowledge took part in the exhibition that had 33 posters from the field of Sciences, 27 from the Humanities, 26 from Social and Legal Sciences, 16 from Health Sciences and 14 from the field of Engineering and Architecture.

The 4th PhD Meetings, organized by the International Center for Postgraduate Studies, are intended as a meeting point for young researchers to get to know the forefront of the research conducted by other PhD students. Moreover, the program of workshops and conferences offers the possibility of working together on resources and skills that facilitate the transference of the results of the research to society.

The Vice-Rectors of Research and Campus of International Excellence, Paz Suárez Rendueles, and Internationalization and Postgraduate Studies, Covadong Betegón, closed the meeting accompanied by the general director of Universities of the Principality, Miriam Cueto, who highlighted the commitment of the regional government with the human resources devoted to science.
