More than fifty specialists from 30 universities will study in detail diverse aspects from the life and work of the writer and thinker
In remembrance of the 250 anniversary of the death of Benito Jerónimo Feijoo (1676-1764), the Feijoo Institute of Studies of the 18th Century of the University of Oviedo has organized the International Conference entitled Con la razón y la experiencia: Feijoo 250 años después. Throughout two days, Thursday and Friday, more than fifty specialists coming from around 30 universities of seven countries will analyzes with meetings and communications different aspects of the life and work of the thinker.
The Rector of the University of Oviedo, Vicente Gotor; the Councilor for Education, Culture and Sports, Ana González; the Councilor for Education and Culture of Oviedo, Inmaculada González; the Director of the Feijoo Institute of Studies of the 18th Century, Álvaro Ruiz de la Peña Solar, and the Director of the Conference, Inmaculada Urzainqui, inaugurated the conference at the Main Hall and agreed on the relevance of Feijoo in our times.
The five speakers invited by the organization are Pedro Álvarez de Miranda (Royal Spanish Academy), who will offer the plenary session; Michel Dubuis (University of Lyon); Joaquín Álvarez Barrientos (CSIC), current President of the Spanish Society of Studies of the 18th Century; José Luís Gómez Urdáñez (University of La Rioja), and Francisco Sánchez-Blanco (University of Bochum), in charge of the closing plenary, which will take place at the RIDEA.
The conference, which has been possible thanks to the collaboration of the Town Council of Oviedo, the Council for Education and Culture of the Principality of Asturias, the FICYT and the RIDEA, proposes an analysis of the different aspects of Feijoo's work (literary, scientific, philosophical, etc.), structured in six great thematic sets: intellectual context; biographical aspects; thought; expressive dimension; relation with the representatives of power, and representations of Feijoo. These comunnications and conferences will lead to a book that will be published in 2015.
The activities of the conference will include the presentation of the first volume of Feijoo's Cartas eruditas y curiosas, which has just been edited by Inmaculada Urzainqui and Eduardo San José, and published by the Feijoo Institute of Studies of the 18th Century, the Town Council of Oviedo and KRK. The act will take place this Thursday at 20:00 at the Archeological Museum of Asturias.
