The academic institution provides €150,000 to finance the enrollment fees of students who meet the academic requirements but lack the economic resources
The University of Oviedo has multiplied threefold in one year the funds aimed at financing the enrollment fees of students in situtations of urgent economic need. The academic institution has just published the new call for this scholarships with €100,000 that are added to the €50,000 that it has already spent this year for the same purpose.
The increase in the past years of youths with economic hardships to pay for their fees has led the Office of the Vice-Rector for Students to prioritize and focus its expenditure in these scholarships for students in urgent need. The goal is to manage that nobody who meets the academic requirements is left outside the university due to lack of economic resources.
In the first call, in 2010, around €16,000 were given to these scholarships, an amount that, despite the strong budget cuts, has been steadily increased until it reached €43,000 last year, and €150,000 in 2014. So far, more than 180 students have benefitted from this program in the past four years.
The scholarships for students in urgent economic need finance the enrollment fees for the first year as long as they meet the minimum requirements established for both their academic performance and the economic thresholds of their family, and which are found in the publication of the Official Journal of the Principality of Asturias (BOPA).
