The University of Oviedo opens the Fifth Scientific Summer Campuses

A total of 120 youths from all corners of Spain will participate in the four projects that seek to bring them closer to science that have been developed by the Asturian academic institution

The University of Oviedo inaugurated this morning at the Main Hall of the Historical Building the fifth edition of the Scientific Summer Campuses. This year, a total of 120 students from all over Spain will stay at the University of Oviedo during July. Each group of Secondary and Baccalaureate students will spend in Asturias a week conducting different activities to get closer to the world of science. This initiative is part of the activities developed by the Campus of International Excellence and will have the participation of 50 researchers from the University in different fields of knowledge.

The Vice-Rector for Research and Campus of International Excellence, Paz Suárez Rendueles, and the chief of the Service of Students, Counseling and Educational Participation of the Council of Education, Culture and Sports, Rosana Fernández Victorero, were in charge of welcoming this morning the first group of participants. The Scientific Summer Campuses are an initiative promoted by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and the FECYT, with the collaboration of La Caixa's Socil Works, and organized by the universities. They will take place during the month of July at the Campuses of International Excellence of the country.

The goal of the Scientific Summer Campuses is to awake the scietific vocation among Spanish youths, providing them with a unique experience to get direct contact with the tasks of a researcher. Each student participates in a scientific project designed by university teachers in collaboration with Secondary Education teachrs. The participants will get to know the principles of the researching work: the scientific method, working techniques, the gathering and analysis of data.

The University of Oviedo joins this initiative with four projects of scientific dissemination: the Twitter Geológico; a workshop on the Bases Científicas de las Investigaciones Criminalísticas, an approach to the Electrónica: diseña, construye, tira y… ¡gana!, and an activity entitled El Lenguaje de las Células.

The program also includes tours around the Old Town of Oviedo; workshops on scientific communication, sports and leisure time activities. When they finish their stay, the students will presents the results they had obtained during their participation in the projects.
