The University of Oviedo inaugurates an exhibition that reunites the work of Emiliano Alonso, Pedro Pablo Alonso, Manolo Méndez, Ánxel Nava, Hugo O'Donnell, Ástur Paredes, Vicente Pastor and María Jesús Rodríguez.
The Cultural Center for University Extension LAUDEO (at the Historical Building) of the University of Oviedo reunites, for the first time since 1987, the work of the artists who formed the ABRA group. Stewarded by Esther Rodríguez, the exhibition titled ABRA. The Reunion gives the public the chance to see the work of Emiliano Alonso, Pedro Pablo Alonso, Manolo Méndez, Ánxel Nava, Hugo O'Donnell, Ástur Paredes, Vicente Pastor and María Jesús Rodríguez.
The exhibition is a homage to an era of artistic high spirits that led the ABRA group to start exhibitions in diverse halls and regional museums, and to take their work to New York, at the West Broadway Gallery in 1984. They represent a time when Spain was at the front lines of the new artistic trends with the creation of biennials and exhibitions like Arco. In the regional scene, the Museum of Fine Arts was born and several important artistic competitions like the National Contest of Luarca were created. "ABRA is a piece of an almost (or, rather, completely) magical world, a meeting point with the cosmos of creation and a nexus between reality and art", comments the steward of the exhibition about the group of inquisitive youths who met to discuss art.
In 1987, they exhibited their work for the last time as a collective in the Museum of Fine Arts. This afternoon, during the inauguration at the University of Oviedo, they reunited as a group, with the presence of representatives of the regional artistic scene, critics and the general public that highlighted how current their work feels after almost three decades. Present in the inauguration alongside the Rector were the Vice-Rector for University Extension and Communication, Vicente Domínguez; the professor of Art History and ex-Vice Rector Ana María Fernández; the steward, Esther Rodríguez, and the artist Anxel Nava, who spoke on behalf of the group.
The exhibition, free of charge, will be open at the Exhibition Hall of the Historical Building (San Francisco 1, Oviedo) until next June 20, on Mondays to Fridays, from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:30.
