The prestigious European Physical Society (EPS) High Energy Particle Physics Prize has been awarded this year to the work done by the scientists on the ATLAS and CMS experiments that take place at the Large Hadron Collider of the European Lab of Particle Physics (CERN). The award recognizes the value of the discovery of a new particle whose characteristics match those of the Higgs boson, a fundamental particle whose existence was predicted more than 40 years ago and which scientists have been trying to find since then.

The researchers of the group of Experimental Physics of High Energies of the University of Oviedo have been collaborating for more than two decades with the CMS experiment and have actively contributed to the scientific activities related to the discovery, being both in charge and coordinating one of the main channels of search.

The European Physical Society wanted to recognize the work of hundreds of scientists of all around the globe, who coordinate their efforts in the two experiments conducted by the CERN: a work that achieved a landmark last summer with the discovery of Higgs boson, the so-called God Particle.

The award ceremony will take place next July 22 at the Swedish capital, Stockholm, during the celebration of the annual conference of the EPS.
