The winning research has been conducted by a team of the area of immunology of the Central University Hospital of Asturias
The University of Oviedo has given the National Awards for Research in Sports Medicine, which reached their sixteenth edition this year. This time, the first prize went to a research conducted by a team of the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA), from the area of Immunology, entitled Potenciación de la Respuesta inmunológica a la vacunación en atletas sometidos a entrenamiento de fuerza versus entrenamiento de resistencia.
The Rector, Vicente Gotor, awarded the prizes alongside the Vice-Rector for Research and Campus of International Excellence, Paz Suárez Rendueles; the Director of the Area of Institutional Relations and Social Matters of Cajastur, Carlos Siñeriz, and the Director of the School of Sports Medicine and Delegate of the Rector, Miguel del Valle.
The research that won the first prize, awarded with €6,000, has been conducted by Rebeca Alonso Arias, Marco Antonio Moro García, Benjamín Fernández García, Ainara Echeverría de Carlos, Manuel Rodríguez Alonso and Carlos López Larrea. This research has proved that the anti-bodies generated as a consequence of vaccination are three times more powerful in athletes that have undergone weight training after being vaccinated.
The second prize, awarded with €3,000, went to the research led by José Antonio López Calbet, Eficiencia mecánica en el ejercicio de sprint en seres humanos, in which David Morales Álamo and José Losa Reyna, from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, have also participated.
The third prize, awarded with €1,500, went to the research entitled Entrenamiento en altitud, rendimientoandtransporte de oxígeno en nadadores de élite: ensayo de tres estrategias con grupos paralelosandcontroles a nivel del mar, a research led by Ferrán Rodríguez Guisado (University of Barcelona) Xavier Iglesias Reig (University of Granada), María Belén Feriche Fernandez-Castanys (University of Granada), Carmen Calderón Soto (CAR de Granada), Diego Chaverri JovéandAnna Barrero Franquet (University of Barcelona), Nadine B Wachsmuth (Universitat Bayreuth / Alemania), Walter SchmidtandBenjamin D. Levive (Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine and University of Texas. USA). The winners of the awards showcased their research in an open session during the afternoon.
