The staging of a play, the creation of a website and a series of conferences by writers who represent innovative approaches are among the initiatives carried out by the Chair
The Ángel González Chair starts tomorrow Wednesday, May 15, its activity schedule. Two series of conferences, a play and the creation of a website devoted to the poet are some of the first initiatives of the Chair, which is supported by the Council of Education, Culture and Sports of the Principality of Asturias.
"Lecciones de cosas con Ángel González" is the title of the initiative that, faithful to the spirit of University Extension, will take the voice of the author of Palabra sobre palabra around several Asturian localities. The informative conferences on different aspects of the figure of Ángel González (his poetry, his critical works, his relation with music and his presence in contemporary Asturian poetry) will take place until May 30 in Cangas del Narcea, Pravia, Colunga and Ciaño.
This first series of conferences on the figure of the winner of the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature starts tomorrow with Ricardo Labra (poet and critic), who will talk in Cangas del Narce about La poesía de Ángel González: deixis y poética, and with Rodrigo Olay (researcher from the University of Oviedo, poet and critic), who will offer a conference in Pravia titled Palabras sobre palabras: la obra crítica de Ángel González. These conferences will be repeated on May 26 in Ciaño and Colunga, respectively.
The series of conferences will be completed with Antón García (poet, critic and editor), with the conference titled Ángel González, en otras palabras, on May 16 in Ciaño, and on May 22 in Cangas del Narcea, and Javier García Rodríguez (writer and professor of the University of Oviedo), with Letra y música de Ángel González, on May 22 in Pravia and May 30 in Colunga. All the conferences will be open to the public free of charge, until maximum capacity is met.
The closing ceremony will see all the speakers together in a round table on May 24 at the Main Hall of the LAUDEO Cultural Center (Historical Building of the University), moderated by Araceli Iravedra, Director of the Ángel González Chair.
The premiere of the play titled Añorar el futuro que no existe. Ángel González (1925-2008), will also take place this month. The staging is made by the members of the Theater Classroom of the University of Oviedo, directed by Etelvino Vázquez. The premiere will be on May 29, at 19:00, in the Conference Hall of the Library of Humanities of the Campus of El Milán.
New academic year and new literature
The new series of conferences will commence after the summer, with the title of New Literature, and will be focused on the most invigorating aesthetic proposals that practice formats that do not fit the established conventions and which are being recognized by both critics and the reading public. The conferences will take place once per month, starting in September and throughout the academic year, featuring authors such as Agustín Fernández Mallo, Manuel Vilas, Mercedes Díaz Villarías and Ricardo Menéndez Salmón.
Another noteworthy enterprise, currently under development, is the creation of a website devoted to the poet: a web portal in which any kind of bibliographical, graphical, sound and audiovisual materials and resources related to the life and works of Ángel González will be added. It will become, then, the meeting point for both researchers and readers of the poet and academic, who employed part of his creative activity in the defense of dialoguing and the liberty of words.
The Ángel González Chair was approved by the Governing Council of the University of Oviedo last February, as an initiative of the Office of the Vice-Rector for University Extension and Communication. The Chair is born with the purpose of promoting the knowledge of the figure and works of the poet and, in general terms, of literary and artistic creation and of the humanistic studies of society.
