TESELAS is a new dissemination project promoted by the University of Oviedo in collaboration with Radio Televisión del Principado de Asturias (RTPA). The initiative seeks to bring the whole Asturian society closer to the work of young researchers by featuring the contents and the main discoveries of their PhD Theses.

The Rector of the University of Oviedo, Vicente Gotor, and the general director of RTPA, Antonio Virgili, presented TESELAS this morning, which will be broadcasted every week on the public Asturian television starting on Saturday, February 15, at 13:30. The small audio-visual pieces have been produced by the University of Oviedo under the guidance of the researchers and touch upon studies conducted at the academic institution related to all the fields of knowledge.

During the presentation, the Rector commented on the fact that TESELAS will show the Asturian society "an added value that belongs to the University, the original works of our young researchers". In turn, Antonio Virgili paid a special attention to the pioneering nature of the collaboration between the University and the Asturian television and highlighted the "commitment that we, as public institutions, have to reflect in the talent and the possibilities that exist in this region".

The initiative, part of the framework of action of the Campus of International Excellence, is a pioneer in the Spanish university system

The project, part of the strategic actions of the Campus of International Excellence, aims at providing society with a way to access the scientific knowlege generated in Asturias. The voice of the youngest researchers of the region will serve to make known, in an educational tone, topics that have an extraordinary scientific relevance.

The format of TESELAS is a narration in the first person that answers key questions about each PhD Thesis and the main contributions that their research has yielded. Broadcasting will begin with a study on the molecular mechanism involved in cancer and aging, by Jorge Manuel de la Rosa, from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. This thesis was directed by Doctors Carlos López-Otín and Juan Cadiñanos.

The collaboration between the University of Oviedo and RTPA through this space is a pioneering project for the dissemination of research within the Spanish university system. TESELES will be broadcasted with subtitles for people with hearing impairments, in accordance to the regulations of the UNE.

During the latest academic year, almost 200 PhD Theses were defended at the University of Oviedo and the Asturian academic institution has 21 agreements with foreign universities for the international co-tutoring of theses.
